I’ve been using a VR headset for the last six hours. Time dilates, scale dilates. Once you are out you want to go back in. Once you are in you know you have to get back out. net lag is real.
Depending on the experience you are having in VR scale and time can change. Like a casino or grocery store most VR doesn’t have a clock or work on a kind of regular time and so you can get lost in it for a very long time. Circadian is thrown off and you lizard brain gets confused about sounds and tactile sense.
Another observation, not all VR is a simulation of reality or works like reality does. I have been a dead man in limbo, a chicken on a farm, an elephant on rampage, an abstract presence amongst fractal greebles, jumped off of cliffs higher than humanly built, a criminal on trial and on the run.
I’ve ridden a slingshot path around the moon while listening to Debussy, I experienced my own voice as a physical space to float through.
This thing will be beyond art and reality. Whatever was dreamed about in the 80’s and 90’s about cyberspace is so deftly wrong but in all the right ways. All of the most perfectly nuanced ways.
