monsterman: Metropolis by Thea von Harbou

Read this and learn a bit about one of the collaborators on this artwork.
This is something special to see come across my tumblr dashboard. This is connected directly to my family.
My father, Patrick Smith, designed the cover for this and did the layout and typesetting for the inside. He worked as a graphics designer from the 1975-2011.
He liked to explain to me that his designs here were inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright decorative flourishes and Art Deco. I came to love these styles very dearly thanks to my fathers eyes.
This is the cover of the last printing of the book from 1977. None have come since. Most people are aware of the movie. Most are unaware it was a novel first and I can honestly say I was lucky to have read this when I was 12. It is what started my love of all things future and my hope for it.
This beautiful artifact sat on our coffee table at my fathers home and I would read it over and over.
The artwork is by Michael Kaluta and the original artwork and a preliminary sketch by Michael hangs over my fathers Amiga 3000 at his home in Virginia Beach, VA not far from another FLW house. Right over the Amiga I first learned MIDI usage on. Right next to the first analog synth I ever played.
I remember being 13 and hearing my father emulate Vangelis on his MIDI controller and I would read this laid out on the floor.
My father has grown ill as of late. This is part of my families history and a pleasure to see here on tumblr. (6:03pm)
Ben Britton, thing:78765, Sycamore Seed Model (2013)
Take a second and look at this.
This morning a man named Ben Britton in Wellington, New Zealand touched an idea of the future. This is, in part, what the future looks like.
You know what a Sycamore seed is. Ever since you were a kid you’ve seen them helicoptering down in your neighborhood. You’ve played with them and maybe learned a little bit about propellers from them. The seed is the fruit of the Sycamore tree.
This is a 3D printable model of a Sycamore seed. It has no purpose but as an analogous representation of a sycamore seed. It flies like one and is the same size. With appropriate painting and consideration one would not be able to tell the differences of the analog to it’s original.
There’s something fundamentally representative of the future in this. I can’t point it out exactly but I know it is there. What do you think?
Oh and someone notify Bruce Sterling of this. (12:30pm)
